Lights! Camera! Action!

On Wednesday, I spent the morning filming a live segment on Showcase Minnesota. I was demoing a maedeup knot and also promoting my new book, "Elegant Knotted Jewelry." The show is live and I was told by my producer to arrive at 9:15 a.m.

Curt went with me to help out and take some pictures. We arrived at the KARE 11 studio at 9:00 and entered through the main entrance. They were expecting us and we had a production assistant show us to the green room.

This is a picture of the green room and it was actually a shade of green. We were the only ones there at the time.

Here is Curt waiting for my segment.

This is me. The PA came in a few times to see if we needed anything and I started to get a little worried when it was about 9:45 and I hadn't set anything up yet. It was then that I was asked to go into the studio to set up.
I just had some jewelry to put out and the steps to the bracelet I was going to make. I was asked to do some maedeup for the camera to use in the cold open. So I smiled and worked on one of the step outs of the bracelet

The host and hostess talk about current events in the first segment. The second segment was a cooking demonstration. The chef was making fish tacos and they smelled delicious.

I was surprised to find that the cameras did not have cameramen. They were all controlled remotely by one person.

I was the third segment and I did the segment with Corbin Seitz. She was wonderful to work with and really loved the maedeup. She came over to introduce herself shortly before my segment and to go over what we would do during the segment. She also told me that we had five minutes for the segment.

This is the exit that we took out of the building. This was my first experience with doing live television. I knew that if I made a mistake that I would have to just continue and make the best out of it. Luckily, it went really, really well. You can watch the segment here. There are also instructions for the bracelet that I made on the show.
While waiting for my segment, we got to sit on the part of the set where the KARE11 news team does the news. After my segment I packed up my stuff and we were escorted out of the building. I had forgotten to remove my mic and realized I still had it on as we walked to the car. My producer was coming out the door looking for us and the mic. We had a laugh about that.

Messy Eater

We had a visitor on our deck the other morning and he left quite a mess. It is Fall here in Minnesota although this last week has been more like summer. Temperatures have been in the 80's with humidity. The air conditioner hasn't run much this summer but we've had in on the past few days.

Our apartment in South Korea did not have central air so we had wall units in the bedrooms and a floor unit in our living room. We ran them all the time due to the summer heat and humidity. It would have been nice to open the windows once in a while but our apartment faced a busy street and there was always lots of car honking going on. The buses honk so much that they have a fader on the horn so the longer they press the horn the quieter it becomes. It was still annoying.

I revisited one of my old maedeup knots this week. I hadn't done a gajibangseok maedeup (eggplant) knot for a long time. I had forgotten all the steps but luckily I have video of Su-Mi, my Korean maedeup teacher, completing each knot just in case I forgot.
This is a gajibangseok maedeup with ears just to make it a little more complicated. It is a wonderful knot to show off a favorite pendant. I'm working on some Christmas presents that will use this knot. Making gifts is a great way to practice maedeup and it's never too early to think about Christmas.

Korea's Big Bang

I miss the good old days when MTV played music videos all day long. While I lived in South Korea I fell in love with KPop. The music is catchy and I always found myself humming to the hit of the week. Now that I'm back in the States I still try to keep up with what's hot in Korea. Big Bang is a Korean boy's band and their latest hit is "Gara Gara Go." I love this song and video.

Before and After

This is a picture of a maedeup bracelet I've been working on. The first step is to create the knot and the second step is tightening the knot. Sometimes I find tightening as challenging as creating the knot. It is so much fun to see what it looks like when you are finished.

Finished!

This is a picture of two bracelets and a necklace I've been working on. I will be listing them on Ebay soon.

I also have some exciting news! I will be demoing maedeup on a Twin Cities television show called "Showcase Minnesota." It airs daily from 10:00am-11:00am on channel 11 and I will be appearing September 23, 2009. It has been a while since I've done any television and I am really looking forward to it.
