Lunch with the Choi's

Yesterday we met Mr. Choi, his wife and granddaugher at VIPS for lunch. I hadn't seen Mr. Choi since we arrived in Korea. His granddaughter I have mentioned before because her English is unbelievable. She has learned everything from English DVDs and television programs that are in English. She speaks with no accent and she understands everything that we say to her.

As we entered VIPS, she was waiting for us and ran into my arms so excited to see us. I picked her up and didn't want to let her go. She took us upstairs to where everyone was waiting. For lunch, Mrs. Choi, myself and their granddaughter (I really need to learn her name) had the salad bar while Rocketman and Mr. Choi had steak which also included the salad bar.

The salad bar is more like a buffet. It had tacos with all the fixings, pizza, chicken nuggets, french fries, lots of vegetable dishes, salads including Caesar and a few soups to choose from. They also had a dessert buffet that had tiramisu, cheesecake, cream puffs and ice cream. I'm sure I"m leaving out things.

Choi's granddaughter would not leave my side as we made our way to the buffet. She also wanted everything that I was eating so I filled her plate as I filled mine. Rocketman also got plenty to each along with his steak which came a little raw for me. It looked medium raw and I like my steak medium well to well done. But the food was delicious.

VIPS is not inexpensive and Mr. Choi always pay when we go out. Rocketman and I really wanted to pay this time. It was Lunar New Year and the custom is for the children give money to the parents so I told Choi that when wanted to pay because of Lunar New Year. It was great that he didn't make too much of a fuss. I was shocked that the total bill came to 150,000WON ($150.00 USD) but it was well worth it.

Mr. Choi is going to try to figure out what bus to take to get to Chilbo in it's new location. I will start out with walking but if it is very cold I would rather take a bus. The time went quickly and soon it was time to go. Choi's granddaughter was upset and didn't want us to go. I told her that as soon as I got my cell phone, I would give her grandfather my number and she could call me anytime. I also told her that we were going to be here a year and would see her often.

  1. Thank you for sharing this sweet story. You have a friend--or a fan. Such a nice welcoming.

Becky I have been following you only a few months. I did not catch why you were in Korea before nor why you are back??

  2. We were in South Korea for two years from 2007-2009. My husband's job required a lot of travel to Asia in 2010 so we decided to return for this year and the company agreed.
